Amritsar Med College says jeans, skirts, T-shirts uncivilised; bans them

Amritsar: The Government Medical College here has imposed a blanket ban on jeans, T-shirts, skirts and capri trousers on the college premises. The ban will come into effect from October 1. The students are stunned by the unusual diktat of the college management.

The college principal Sujata Sharma issued a notification on Tuesday saying that these pieces of apparel were ‘uncivlised’ and the students should not wear them to practical and theory classes.

The notification says that students of MBBS, B.Sc. and diploma courses should wear formal trousers and shirts with white aprons. The women students can also wear salwar suits.

Teachers to ensure compliance

The principal has asked all the teachers to ensure that the students adhere to the dress code. Copies of the notification have been sent to the heads of departments and hostel superintendents.

Mansimrat Singh, the president of the students’ union of the college said that the students are shocked by the order. “It is an interference in our personal affairs,” he said. Singh said a meeting of the students’ body has been called to decide the further course of action.
