New Delhi: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday became the second leader from the Bhartiya Janta Party to come out in support of his cabinet colleague Sushma Swaraj, who was subjected to online trolling and hateful tweets over the Tanvi Seth passport issue.
This is very unfortunate. She wasn’t present in the country when this decision was taken. She has no connection with it and the decision isn’t wrong either. Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister
While speaking to a news agency, Gadkari said that the move to issue fresh passport to the inter-faith couple was not a “wrong decision.”
Swaraj was bombarded with hate messages on social media after her ministry transferred a passport department official for allegedly humiliating an inter-faith couple in Lucknow.
Earlier on Monday, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had expressed his support for Swaraj and said ‘whatever is happening is wrong’.
The reaction from these two leaders come after the several Congress stood in support of Swaraj, with most of its leader condemning the trolling.
Swaraj ‘liked’ some tweets sent out by trolls on Sunday and asked her followers if they approve of such tweets. “Friends: I have liked some tweets. This is happening for the last few days. Do you approve of such tweets? Please RT,” she tweeted on 30 June.
On 1 July, 24 hours after she started the poll, 57% of the respondents backed her, while 43 % said ‘yes’ to online trolling. A total of 1,24,305 Twitter users participated in the poll.
Sushma’s husband Swaraj Kaushal was also dragged into the issue on Sunday by a twitter user.
Kaushal tweeted a screenshot of a post by a Twitter user who asked him to “beat her up and teach her not to do Muslim appeasement”.
