Adidas to gift seven pairs of special shoes to India’s first heptathelete

New Delhi: German multinational giant Adidas will present India’s first heptathlete Swapna Barman with seven pairs of special shoes – one for each of the seven different events that form part of heptathlon.

Swapna Barman has six toes in each foot and that is why she needs special shoes. She had problems wearing normal shoes and running or jumping only enhances her discomfort. A resident of West Bengal, Swapna had grabbed headlines in August this year when in a tough competition, she won gold medal in the Asian Games by clocking 6,026 points in the seven rounds.

Olympic prospects

Barman was included in the Target Olympic Podium (TOP) Scheme of the sports department of Government of India. The scheme is aimed at identifying and supporting potential medal prospects for 2020 Olympic Games.

After her Asiad victory, she had shared her pain with the media. Adidas decided to help her out. The company is working on designing and producing special shoes for Barman for the past three months, She had visited the Athlete Services Lab of Adidas in Germany, where precise measurements of her feet were taken.
