Abortions for ₹2,500 – without a doctor

Alwar (Rajasthan): A team led by the district chief medical and health officer (CMHO), on Thursday, raided two private hospitals where illegal abortions were being performed. The team was shocked to discover that the hospitals had operation theatres and equipment for performing MTP (Medical Termination of Pregnancy) but no doctor. The Jeevandhara Hospital and Dev Hospital have been sealed for further investigations. Medical records, including OPD, IPD and labour room slips were seized from Jeevandhara Hospital while no records were found in Dev Hospital.

The team that carried out the raid included deputy CMHO Dr. Shyam Sundar Agarwal, PCPNDT Coordinator Ghafoor Khan, Drug Control Officer and others.

The CMHO said that the no consent letters were found at Jeevandhara Hospital. At first sight it seems that the hospital was being operated without doctors, he said. The operation theatre, labour room and IPD, OPD slips have also been seized. Hospital Director Rajkumari Sulania did not respond to the notice served on her some time back.

₹2,500 was the charge

The raids were conducted following reports that the two hospitals – Jeevandhara located at NEB Extension and Dev located at Ranjit Nagar – were charging ₹2,500 per abortion, no questions asked.

No consents letters, no records

In the case of Dev Hospital, Dr Agrawal said, there were no doctors in the operation theatre and the labour room when the raid was conducted. Neither were consent letters for abortion found here. The patients were being treated illegally in the hospital, and no patients’ OPD and IPD records were found.

The records of the medical store operating in Jeevandhara Hospital have also been seized and are being inspected by the drug control officer. It is being probed as to which doctor wrote the prescriptions for the medicines sold to patients. Allopathic medicines being sold without a license were seized from Dev Hospital.
