A year after marrying the woman he raped, man gets 7 years in jail

Court turns down his wife's pleas, says she does not have any locus standi

Moga (Punjab): A local court, here on Wednesday, sentenced a man to seven years in prison for raping a woman. But there is more to the tale than a mere conviction for rape.

The convict has been the husband of the victim for the past one year and they have a child too. And even more interestingly, the two had got married in the court itself.

Arrrest, bail, love

Palvinder Singh was charged with raping a minor girl Jaspreet (assumed name) in 2013. At that time, Jaspreet was a minor, aged 17. On the complaint of the father of the girl, Palvinder was charged with rape and abduction and was arrested. He was enlarged on bail in the same year. Subsequently, the accused and the victim fell in love and got married in the court of the Moga district and session’s judge on July 4, 2017. They are now the parents of a child.

Wife’s pleas turned down

However, the trial continued. On more than one occasions, Jaspreet appeared before the court, pleading for closure of the case on the ground that she was now the wife of the accused and was ready to withdraw the complaint. However, the court would have none of it. The court said that as she was a minor at the time of the incident and because the complaint was filed by her father, she had no locus standi in the matter.

On Wednesday, the court pronounced Palvinder guilty and sentenced him to seven years in prison. A fine of Rs 5,000 was also imposed on him. However, his mother, who was also a co-accused in the case, was let off.
