In his upcoming film Kesari, Akshay Kumar plays the role of Havildar Ishar Singh who participates in the Battle of Saragarhi (in which an army of 21 Sikhs fought against 10,000 Afghans in 1897). The trailer of the film sees Akki sporting an army uniform. While this is just one uniform he will be seen wearing throughout the film. In totality, there were 30 such uniforms crafted for the action star.
Sharing the reason behind the same, costume designer of the movie, Sheetal Sharma says, “Considering Akshay plays a warrior in the film it has him doing a lot of action scenes, there is also bloodshed in the movie. The blood stains, the dirt and dust on the sets and heavy duty action scenes leading to the wear and tear of the costume is the reason we made multiple replicas of his uniform. Such that once one uniform gets spoilt, we could slip Akshay into its replica without wasting any time”
While the team made 30 replicas of Akshay’s uniform, the rest of the 20 Sikh warrior characters received 15 duplicates each. The uniform was accessorized with leather belts, suspenders, a leather bag, leather water bottle etc.
For Akshay, shooting in the look of Ishar Singh has been a tough affair. The main reason being the weight of the costume. As a Sikh, he wears a huge turban that weighed 6 kgs plus the metal ring on his head that holds the turban together. That apart the shoes he sports has a metal rim at the bottom. “The overall weight of what Akshay wears is 16 kilos!” mentions Sheetal as he signs off.
