20-year-old Muslim youth lynched in UP over cattle theft allegations

Bareilly: In yet another incident of lynching, a 20- year-old youth was beaten to death by a group of 50 villagers, who suspected him of being a cattle thief. As per reports, the incident took place in Bholapur Hindoliya village in UP’s Bareilly district.

According to the police, the victim – Shahrukh Khan – was still alive when they rescued him. However, he died during treatment at the district hospital. Khan along with three other men was allegedly trying to steal a buffalo when the villagers spotted him. As the villagers closed in on them – the men who accompanied fled but Shahrukh was held by the group.

The police has lodged an FIR against 30 unidentified villagers under IPC section 302 (murder). They have also lodged a case against Khan’s accomplices.

As per the preliminary investigation, the victim was a tailor by profession and had returned to Bareilly from Dubai in July this year after leaving his job at his maternal uncle’s shop there. He was the youngest among the seven siblings.

“Around 10 pm on Tuesday, he insisted on going to our aunt’s house in the neighbouring village. However, our parents refused to let him step out at that hour as it was not safe. After sometime, his friends arrived and he stepped out with them. He promised us that he won’t go too far,” Victims’s brother Wasim Khan was quoted as saying by TOI.

The cases against Khan’s accomplices and 30 unidentified villagers have been based on the accounts of Buffalo owner and deceased’s brother.
