Woman raped in moving train in MP, police arrest accused 

Cops say the survivor may be mentally unstable 

Katni: In a shocking incident, a woman reported to be mentally unstable was raped aboard the Vindhyachal Express (from Itarsi to Bhopal) at Katni.

The incident occured late on Monday night in the general compartment of the train, and the accused was arrested by Government Railway Police (GRP), immediately after the incident. A few weeks ago, a teenager was gang raped on a standing train, at the Katni Railway Station.

According to GRP sources, the accused Umesh Valmiki, a resident of Jabalpur Cantt works at Gotegaon (Narsinghpur) as a sanitation worker. The 26-year-old accused had reportedly stalked the survivor since she boarded the train, in Itarsi for Katni and, raped her later in the night, when the compartment was slightly deserted.

Head constable Parmu Lal and constable Ajay Sharma, who were on duty on the train, saw the incident and apprehended Valmiki immediately.

The accused carried a monthly railway pass from Sridham to Jabalpur station as he is a regular traveller, but instead of getting down at Jabalpur on Monday, he remained in the train after having spotted the survivor.
