Six injured in building collapse in Ghaziabad

Locals told the Senior Superintendent of Police that the building was a shelter for labourers.

Ghaziabad: Five labourers and a child were injured when a five-storey building collapsed in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad on Sunday afternoon when workers were giving finishing touches to it. One person died when the five-storey under-construction building collapsed.

The incident occurred at 3.30 pm in Akash Nagar, a residential colony. Locals told Senior Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Krishna that the building was a shelter for labourers.

“Till now five labourers and a five-year-old child have been rescued,” said Krishna about the rescue operations.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed the district magistrate and SSP Ghaziabad to take immediate action against the guilty and co-ordinate the rescue operation with the NDRF. He also asked the police to immediately lodge an FIR in the matter.

Ghaziabad district magistrate Ritu Maheshwari said prima facie there were issues with the quality of the building and a magisterial inquiry had been ordered. “There seem to be issues with the quality of the building. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered. Seven people have been rescued and sent to a hospital. There is no casualty as of now. Rescue operations are underway,” ANI quoted Maheshwari as saying.
