One is to one: This Haryana school has more-than-ideal student to teacher ratio

Kosali (Haryana): The Government Girls Middle School at Jahidpur in Lukhi district of Haryana is the only school in the state – and probably in the country – where there is only one student and only one teacher. The school’s headmaster is the only teacher in the school.

The school had 22 students in 2013. In 2014-15, the number fell to 12. It reduced to two in 2016-17 and in the current academic session only one student is left in the school. The only student is in class seven. The headmaster, Dayakishan, comes to the school everyday, sweeps the premises and then teaches English and Social Science to his only student. The student goes back to her home after attending the two classes.

Don’t know about it: DEO

When in-charge district education officer Suresh Goriya was asked to comment, she said that she was not aware that a school in her jurisdiction has only one teacher and one student. “I don’t know anything about this. I will find out the truth,” she said. Block Education Officer Jawan Singh, however, admitted that only one student was studying in the school. “For inexplicable reasons, no other student sought admission to the school,” he said. The officer said that all relevant information is available on the portal of the education department.
