Mahagathbandhan will not project a PM face: Akhilesh Yadav

Our objective is to oust BJP from power; who will be the Prime Minister will be decided after the polls, SP chief tells Dainik Bhaskar

Samajwadi Party (SP) national President Akhilesh Yadav says that an opposition coalition – the Mahagathbandhan- is in place to oust the BJP from power in the 2019 general elections. But who would be the next Prime Minister of the country would be decided after the polls.

Vijay Manohar Tiwari talked to him on a wide range of issues

Excerpts

Who will be the face of the Mahagathbandhan – Rahul, Maya, Mamata or you?

We all are battling against the BJP. The NDA government has failed the people. GST and demonetisation have ruined the economy. The people are not happy with the policies and programmes of the BJP. The country wants a new Prime Minister. But who that person would be, that will be decided after the elections.

Why does the country want a new PM?

Our PM went globe-trotting for no rhyme or reason. What did the country get out of it? Farmers are committing suicide, unemployment is at a record high. The country gained nothing, absolutely nothing.

Can Rahul take on Modi?

The farmers are angry, the poor are angry. Maharashtra has witnessed the highest number of farmer suicides. The question is not of a person. The youth, the farmers, the traders – everyone is unhappy.

But you do need a face to contest elections. Don’t you?

Our issue is unemployment. This country should have world-class infrastructure. Price rise is the issue. Improper implementation of GST is the issue.

Will Mayawati be the game-changer?

You also know who the game-changer is. If you are saying Mayawati ji is the game-changer, it is great. It means you have understood everything.

Why is Akhilesh-Rahul friendship not being extended to Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan?

We are ready to forge an alliance with the Congress and the BJP. We love our bicycle. Currently, our objective is to expand our organisation. MP is also on our radar.
