New Delhi: Veteran Tamil Nadu politician and DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi was buried with state honours near the Anna Memorial on Marina beach in Chennai in the presence of a host of leaders and a sea of supporters.
The body of the five-time chief minister of Tamil Nadu was lowered into a grave beside that of his mentor Annadurai, the founder of DMK. His casket read, “A person who continued to work without rest, now takes rest.”
A massive crowd followed the DMK patriarch’s casket from Rajaji Hall, where leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi had paid tribute to him earlier in the day.
Two people were killed as the rush for a final glimpse of “Kalaignar”, as the police used batons to control the surging crowds.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, West Bengal’s chief minister Mamata Banerjee, Karnataka’s H D Kumaraswamy, Kerala’s Pinarayi Vijayan, Telangana’s K Chandrasekhar Rao, actor-politicians Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, CPI(M) leader Prakash Karat, former CMs of Kerala and Uttar Pradesh Oommen Chandy and Akhilesh Yadav were among leaders who had paid homage to the departed leader.
The Madras high court on Wednesday allowed Karunanidhi to be buried at the beach after Tamil Nadu government had on Tuesday refused to allot space for his burial at the beach, the resting place of many political icons.
The 94-year-old chief of DMK died in a private hospital in Chennai on Tuesday owing to age-related ailments.
