Chandigarh: The opposition is up in arms against the Punjab Government’s decision to demote Harmanpreet Kaur Bhullar, captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, from the post of DSP to that of constable in the state police. The opposition has termed the decision as an ‘insult of a sportsman.’
Harmanpreet Kaur said that she had been offered the job not on the basis of her educational qualifications but on the basis of her sporting skills. “I am ready to join a college and earn an graduation degree but I should not be demoted,” she said.
Kaur claimed that she had no inkling that there was some problem with her degree. “I had already obtained a job on the basis of that degree and if I had even the remotest idea that it is fake, why would I have applied for another job on the basis of the same degree,” she asked. She said that she had been assured by the sports minister that she would continue as DSP.
We have written to the government to change the rules. That is the only way Haramanpreet can retain her DSP rank. Now, everything depends on the government MK Tiwari, DG, Administration, Punjab Police
Give her time to study
Dr Daljeet Singh Cheema, vice-president of the Akali Dal state unit said that Kaur was given appointment as DSP on the basis of her game and not because she was educationally qualified to hold the post. Divesting her of the DSP rank is absolutely wrong. It is an insult of a woman player. She should be given time to complete her studies.
