Friends of Gomti won’t let it run dry

Teams of 200 dedicated volunteers have cleaned the banks of the river, are now planning massive afforestation

Lucknow: In the years to come, the Gomti River would not run dry in summers. This would become possible due to the collective efforts of Gomti Mitra Mandal, a team of about 200 volunteers, who have become friends of the river and have been cleaning its banks for the last three years.

The team members are making the people residing on the banks aware of the need to preserve the river. Dr Sudhakar Rao, a member of Gomti Mitra Mandal, said we must become friends of rivers to save them.
He said locals were participating in the cleanliness campaigns. “The local youths join us and together we shall ensure revival of the river,” he said. Gomti originates from Pilibhit’s Madhotanda and flows for 900 km before joining the Ganga in Varanasi.

Tree plantation

Advocate Madan Singh, who is associated with the Mandal, said CM Yogi Adityanath has given permission for planting saplings on the banks of the river. He said all the friends of the river will participate in tree plantation drive along the 900-km-long course of the river. Singh said natural sources that drain water into the River are drying up due to felling of trees and we want to reverse the trend.
