New Delhi: A Delhi Police sub-inspector’s son was arrested from west Delhi’s Tilak Nagar on Thursday, a day after a video of him beating up a woman went viral.
The arrest comes after Union home minister Rajnath Singh ordered Delhi Police to take action on video showing man severely thrashing a woman. He took to Twitter to assure justice to the girl. His message read, “A video of a girl being beaten brutally by a young man has come to my knowledge. I have talked about this on the phone with the @DelhiPolice Commissioner and asked him to take appropriate action on this.”

Three days after having initially detained him before letting go, this is the second time the police has arrested Rohit Tomar, 21. A second year Delhi University Open School student, Tomar worked at a call centre until last month.
Police said that they got to know about the incident, which took place on September 2, when Jyoti, Rohit’s ex-girlfriend, approached the police with the video. Jyoti filed a complaint Wednesday at the Tilak Nagar police station near her residence in west Delhi. Following this, Rohit was taken into pre-emptive custody.
Rohit had sent Jyoti the video 15 days ago, which showed him thrashing and kicking an unidentified woman at a call centre. He slaps, kicks, verbally abuses, and uses his elbows and knees to strike her, while the woman pleads with him to stop.
Rohit can be heard shouting what sounds a lot like “Jyoti”, followed by calling Amrita a “whore”, who should “never take her name again”. Amrita is heard apologising, saying “I made a mistake, please”.
He had threatened Jyoti that she would meet the same fate if she didn’t marry him. He has also been threatening her with acid attacks, ruining her reputation, and killing her family. The video found its way to a Facebook page called ‘Turban and Beard’ on Thursday, and went viral.
Jyoti told the police that Rohit had temper issues and must have hit the girl in the video over some petty issue. Police said that the woman in the video has not been identified.
Who is making the video?
According to a report in the Print, the 1-minute-44-second-long video clip was recorded by Ali, a friend and classmate of Rohit’s, who works at this call centre.
He can be heard telling Rohit repeatedly to take it easy, as well as things like “Rohit, are you mad?” and “That’s enough”. He also refers to the woman being beaten up as “Amrita” and asks her to stand up. But he does not intervene.
Ali told the Print that he took this video for his own safety. “I came back from the bathroom to find that they were arguing and fighting. I was scared; I didn’t want someone accusing me of doing this tomorrow,” he said.
Ali said he didn’t know the woman being beaten up, and added she might be “Rohit’s club friend”. However, he said both were drunk at the time of the assault. Jyoti is also unsure who the woman is.
According to Ali, Rohit and “Amrita” met two or three days after the incident and “sorted it out”. “She said she won’t file a complaint as she was also drunk,” Ali said, adding that he had not heard from Rohit since that day.
Ali doesn’t know how the video leaked onto Facebook, and denied having anything to do with it. “Why would I upload it? I’m scared since this went viral.”
Asked about Jyoti, Ali said he thought “she is Rohit’s girlfriend”, and that maybe “Amrita said something about Jyoti that Rohit didn’t like”.
Jyoti said her relationship with Rohit lasted about a year-and-a-half, and they were even considering getting married.
“Rohit and I have lived nearby for a long time. So my father asked neighbours and friends about him, and we heard some bad things,” she said.
By that time, however, Jyoti had already begun to notice destructive patterns in Rohit’s behaviour. “He would drink all the time, started doing drugs, would abuse a lot, and didn’t even have a job. So I started distancing myself even before my parents started asking about him,” she told the Print.
