Asian Para Games 2018: Javelin thrower Sandeep Chaudhary clinches India’s first gold

With this feat, Chaudhary added sixth medal to Indian tally in Asian Para Games 2018

New Delhi: Javelin thrower Sandeep Chaudhary on Monday became the first athlete to score a gold in Para Asian Games 2018 for India. Sandeep scored the sixth medal for the country in the championship.

The opening day of the games on Sunday saw Indian athletes bagging two bronze and three silver medals.

The first medal for India was scored by the Badminton team after they lost to Malaysia with a slight gap of 1-2. Suhas Yathiraj, para-badminton player and an IAS officer won the first match after defeating Omar Bakri by 21-8, 21-7.

While in 49 Kg men’s powerlifting, Farman Basha lifted 128 kg and Paramjeet Kumar lifted 127 kg – thereby winning silver and bronze respectively.

Another silver medal was claimed by Devanshi Satijawon in women’s 100-metre butterfly swimming in s-10 category and Suyash Jadhav won a bronze in men’s 200-metre individual medley in SM-7 category.

In chess, all the Indians won their ties with visually impaired Prachurya Kumar Pradhan sealing his victory over Domingos Sávio Fernandes Gusmao from Timor Leste in less than 15 minutes.

In 2018 Asian Para games, 43 nations are participating in 18 well-known sports including wheelchair tennis, powerlifting, shooting, archery and badminton. Asian Para Games was started on October 6 and will conclude on October 13.
