As DMK chief Karunanidhi’s health declines, crowds gather outside Chennai hospital

Chennai: Thousands of police officials have been deployed in Chennai after a hospital reported that DMK president M Karunanidhi’s health has declined. His has been critical since his health worsened on Monday night, party leaders said on Tuesday in Chennai.

Karunanidhi’s younger son and political heir MK Stalin his elder son MK Alagiri and daughter Kanimozhi met Tamil Nadu chief minister E Palaniswami at his residence on Tuesday afternoon. There are 6,500 police officials deployed in Chennai now.

A huge crowd of DMK workers and supporters have massed outside the Kauvery Hospital where Karunanidhi, 94, has been admitted since July 28.

Sources at the Kauvery Hospital said Karunanidhi’s pulse and blood pressure, which touched critical levels at the time of admission, had witnessed improvement but slipped by Monday noon. They added that there are infections in the chest region and this also poses the complication for the medical team treating him in the intensive care unit.

Hundreds of men and women have assembled outside the hospital located in Alwarpet in south Chennai.

“We want to hear the good news about our leader”s health. That is why we are here,” said a party member.

The crowd started to swell after the medical bulletin from the hospital on Monday evening said that Karunanidhi”s condition had deteriorated and maintain his vital signs had become a challenge.

“There has been a decline in the medical condition of Karunanidhi. Maintaining his vital organ functions continues to remain a challenge considering his age related ailments,” said the hospital statement.

The hospital said Karunanidhi”s response to treatment over the next 24 hours would be critical.

Karunanidhi was shifted to the hospital on July 28 after being treated at his home in Chennai’s Gopalapuram for fever and urinary tract infection.

President Ram Nath Kovind, vice-president Venkaiah Naidu, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, former prime minister HD Deve Gowda, actor-politicians Kamal Haasan and Rajnikanth were among those who have visited the hospital and met Karunanidhi’s family.
