Mumbai: Actresses love to flaunt designer wear, and the cost of their one single outfit sometimes runs into lakhs. However, Anushka Sharma’s cost of her outfit in Sui Dhaaga doesn’t even run into thousands!
In the Sharat Katariya directorial, Anushka plays a lady from the lower income group who hails from a small town in India. Interestingly, her look is modeled on a ‘bhandiwali’. Costume designer Darshan Jalan reveals, “When I was narrated about her character, the first person who came to my mind was a bhandiwali (bartanwali – a lady who sells cheap utensils, door to door) who would come to my mother’s house in Ranchi. She used to wear such printed, floral synthetic sarees. These sarees are cheap and are easy to wash and wear.”
Thus, the costume designer picked a few sarees from stores in Lucknow and Ranchi. “The cost of these sarees range between Rs 200 to Rs 600. I got the costliest saree worth Rupees 600 from my mother-in-law. Anushka wears this saree in the sequence where she accompanies Varun Dhawan at his boss’s reception party. It is again a synthetic saree, but this one has a slight embroidery on it,” says Jalan.
Varun who plays the role of Anushka’s husband in the film also appears in a de-glam avatar. Talking about his look, Jalan says, “While shooting for Dum Laga Ke Haisha, I came across a guy in Haridwar. I had taken a few snaps of his. I designed the same look for Varun. He will be seen wearing cheap shirts crafted out of cheap material we bought from local stores near Andheri and Bandra railway stations in Mumbai.”
The film stars Varun Dhawan as Mauji who is a tailor while his wife Mamta played by Anushka is an embroiderer.
