14 Maoists killed in encounter in Chhattisgarh

Personnel from the District Reserve Guard, the paramilitary CRPF and the Special Task Force engaged over 200 Maoists in the fierce gun battle.

New Delhi: Fourteen Maoists have been shot dead in an encounter with security forces near Sukma, Chhattisgarh.

A gunfight broke out late on Sunday night at a forest between Gollapalli and Konta at Sukma, about 390 kilometres from state capital Raipur. Personnel from the District Reserve Guard, the paramilitary CRPF and the Special Task Force engaged over 200 Maoists in the fierce gun battle, informed the police.

Sixteen assault rifles belonging to the Maoists have been recovered from the area, while the security forces are sweeping the area to check for any remaining Maoists, the police said.

More details of the recent encounter are awaited.

The last major gunbattle between security forces and Maoists happened in mid-July, when eight Maoists were shot dead at Bijapur district.
